25 LC 129 0055 House Resolution 62 By: Representatives Au of the 50th, Tran of the 80th, Park of the 107th, Lim of the 98th, and Hong of the 103rd A RESOLUTION Commending Mary D'Souza Sequeira; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, Mary D'Souza Sequeira, an Indian female Olympian, distinguished herself as2 a pioneer in international sports, representing India in track and field as well as field hockey;3 and4 WHEREAS, she competed in the women's 100 and 200 meters at the 1952 Helsinki Summer5 Olympics as part of the first female contingent to represent India at the Olympics; and6 WHEREAS, at the 1951 Asian Games, Mary D'Souza Sequeira earned a Bronze Medal in7 the 200 meters and a Silver Medal in the 4x100 meter relay; and8 WHEREAS, she made history at the 1954 Asian Games by competing in the 4x100 meter9 relay and becoming one of the first Indian women to win a Gold Medal alongside her10 teammates; and11 WHEREAS, in 2013, Mary D'Souza Sequeira was honored with the Dh yan Chand Award12 by the Government of India in recognition of her lifetime achievements in sport and her13 outstanding contributions to athletics; and14 H. R. 62 - 1 - 25 LC 129 0055 WHEREAS, this distinguished gentlewoman has given inspiration to many through her high15 ideals, morals, and deep concern for her fellow citizens, and she possesses the vast wisdom16 which only comes through experience and the strength of charact er which is achieved17 through overcoming the many challenges of life; and18 WHEREAS, she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for19 integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and20 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this21 remarkable and distinguished individual be appropriately recognized.22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that23 the members of this body commend Mary D'Souza Sequeira for her many exemplary athletic24 achievements as well as extend the most sincere best wishes for continued health and25 happiness.26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized27 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Mary28 D'Souza Sequeira.29 H.
