A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
To amend Article 1 of Chapter 2 of Title 35 of the Official Cod e of Georgia Annotated,1
relating to general provisions relative to the department of public safety, so as to provide for2
the establishment of a program to educate the public on safe storage of firearms, contingent3
upon funding; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflic ting laws; and for other4
purposes.5
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:6
SECTION 1.7
Article 1 of Chapter 2 of Title 35 of the Official Code of Geor gia Annotated, relating to8
general provisions relative to the department of public safety, is amended by adding a new9
Code section to read as follows:10
"35-2-17.11
Subject to appropriations by the General Assembly or receipt of other funding for such12
purpose, the department shall establish a program to educate the public on the safe storage13
of firearms and to promote such safe storage. Such program may include information14
including, but not limited to, any laws relating to storing a firearm and preventing persons15
under 18 years of age from accessing a firearm. The department shall be authorized to16

coordinate with the Department of Education in the development of materials providing17
information on best practices for firearm storage for distribut ion of such materials in18
schools. The department shall be authorized to accept federal funds granted by Congress19
or executive order for the purposes of this Code section; provi ded, however, that any20
acceptance and use of federal funds shall not commit state fund s and shall not place an21
obligation upon the General Assembly to continue the purposes for which the federal funds22
are made available."23
SECTION 2.24
All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.25
