25 LC 47 3231 House Bill 146 By: Representatives Taylor of the 92nd, Hugley of the 141st, Jackson of the 165th, McClain of the 109th, Glaize of the 67th, and others A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT To amend Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia A nnotated, relating to1 holidays and observances, so as to designate the month of April each year as "Black2 Women's History Month" in Georgia; to provide for legislative f indings; to provide for3 ceremonies and programs; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting laws; and for4 other purposes.5 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA:6 SECTION 1.7 Chapter 4 of Title 1 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to holidays and8 observances, is amended by adding a new Code section to read as follows:9 "1-4-27.10 (a) The General Assembly hereby finds and determines that:11 (1) The State of Georgia takes great pride in celebrating Black Women's History Month,12 a celebration that is designed to recognize and applaud the ach ievements of African13 American women;14 (2) Generations of Black women throughout American history hav e used their15 intelligence, imagination, sense of wonder, and tenacity to mak e extraordinary16 H. B. 146 - 1 - 25 LC 47 3231 contributions to not only the State of Georgia, but also to the everyday means of how17 Georgians live;18 (3) The State of Georgia is home to many women of talent who represent a remarkable19 range of accomplishments in a wide diversity of specialties, including the arts, literature,20 film, and television; science and technology; news media; jurisprudence and government;21 and education;22 (4) These women's lives and works span the centuries of Americ an history and come23 from a variety of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds;24 (5) The State of Georgia is proud to honor all women seeking t o advance in all of the25 important areas of life's work; and26 (6) There is a need for public education, awareness, and discourse to address the impacts27 Black women have had and continue to have on the State of Georgia and all its people.28 (b) The month of April each year is designated as 'Black Women 's History Month' in29 Georgia.30 (c) Officials and departments of state, county, and municipal governments, boards of31 education, elementary and secondary schools, colleges and universities, businesses, and all32 citizens are encouraged to participate in appropriate ceremonies, programs, and activities33 that commemorate and honor the c ontributions of Black women thr oughout each April34 during Black Women's History Month."35 SECTION 2.36 All laws and parts of laws in conflict with this Act are repealed.37 H.
