ADOPTED SENATE
A RESOLUTION
Naming the forthcoming new legislative office complex the "Sonn y Perdue Legislative1
Building"; and for other purposes.2
WHEREAS, George Ervin "Sonny" Perdue III of Houston County has served this state and3
this country with honor and distinction for many decades; and4
WHEREAS, Perdue served in the United States Air Force, achievin g the rank of Captain5
before his honorable discharge; and6
WHEREAS, Perdue served his local community before being elected to the Georgia State7
Senate in 1990, serving as his party's leader in the Senate fro m 1994 to 1997 and later as8
President Pro Tempore of the Senate; and9
WHEREAS, Perdue was elected as Georgia's Governor in 2002, beco ming the first10
Republican Governor of Georgia since Reconstruction; and11
WHEREAS, Governor Perdue guided our state with distinction and was reelected to a second12
term in 2006; and13

WHEREAS, Governor Perdue continued his service to our country when President Donald14
Trump appointed him to serve as Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture,15
a post he held for four years following his confirmation by the Senate; and16
WHEREAS, following his tenure as Agriculture Secretary, Perdue was appointed as17
Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, the post he currently holds; and18
WHEREAS, due in no small measure to the work, leadership, and achievements of Sonny19
Perdue, the State of Georgia consequently enjoys a robust business climate and economy that20
make possible the construction of a new legislative office comp lex on the grounds of the21
State Capitol that is worthy of the state's elected leaders and the People they serve; and22
WHEREAS, it therefore is proper and appropriate to honor Sonny Perdue's lifetime of public23
service and dedication to the State of Georgia and the United States of America by naming24
after him the new home and symbol of democracy in this state.25
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY that the new26
state legislative office complex, to be completed in the coming years, be forever designated27
and known as the "Sonny Perdue Legislative Building."28
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed29
to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to Chancellor Sonny30
Perdue and to the public and the press.31
