25 LC 112 2922 House Resolution 214 By: Representatives Cheokas of the 151st and Stinson of the 150th A RESOLUTION Commending Americus-Sumter County and recognizing February 19, 2025, as1 Americus-Sumter County Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Sumter County was established by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on3 December 26, 1831, becoming Georgia's 80th county; and4 WHEREAS, the City of Americus was established as the seat of Su mter County by an act5 of the Georgia General Assembly on December 22, 1832; and6 WHEREAS, the City of Americus is named for the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, just7 as the United States of America is; and8 WHEREAS, Americus-Sumter County was home to Souther Field, a Un ited States Army9 aviation training base that served American aviators in World War I as well as American and10 British Aviators in World War II; and11 WHEREAS, the famed pilot Charles Linberg bought his first airplane and made his first solo12 flight in Americus-Sumter County; and13 H. R. 214 - 1 - 25 LC 112 2922 WHEREAS, Americus-Sumter County is a leading producer of Georgi a's cotton, peanuts,14 and vegetables as well as a significant producer of livestock; and15 WHEREAS, Americus-Sumter County is home to South Georgia Techni cal College and16 Georgia Southwestern State University, both of which contribute to Georgia's workforce in17 significant ways; and18 WHEREAS, the internationally recognized housing program Habitat f o r H u m a n i t y19 International was founded and still maintains its headquarters in the City of Americus; and20 WHEREAS, the Sumter County City of Plains is home to the 39th President of the United21 States, the late Jimmy Carter, and to the late First Lady Rosal ynn Carter, who together22 brought international attention to Sumter County, Georgia.23 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that24 the members of this body commend Americus-Sumter County for its many contributions to25 the State of Georgia and recognize February 19, 2025, as Americus-Sumter County Day at26 the state capitol.27 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized28 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the29 public and the press.30 H.
