A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending Carleen Cumberbatch, the 2025 Distin guished Older1
Georgian; and for other purposes.2
WHEREAS, Carleen Cumberbatch has been honored as this year's Di stinguished Older3
Georgian for her more than 30 years of advocacy and volunteer service to the senior citizens4
of DeKalb County and beyond; and5
WHEREAS, the Distinguishe d Older Georgian Award was established in 2003 by the6
Georgia Council on Aging to recognize individuals over the age of 70 who have served as7
positive role models and made significant contributions to society through their occupational8
or volunteer efforts; and9
WHEREAS, since discovering that DeKalb County offered no services to seniors unless they10
were homebound or indigent, she has worked to address these gap s through volunteerism,11
community organizing, and program development; and12
WHEREAS, she is the founder of the South DeKalb Senior Line Dan cers, which she13
originally formed to encourage women to exercise together once a week by line dancing as14
well as to advocate for DeKalb County seniors; and15

WHEREAS, as an AARP volunteer in the 1990s, she conducted workshops and seminars on16
Medicare, lectured nursing classes at Georgia Perimeter College , and organized and17
implemented senior group ministries; and18
WHEREAS, she has further served AARP as an entitlement speaker; community19
coordinator; district coordinator for DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Roc kdale counties; women's20
specialist for Georgia; and coordinator for Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (SALT)21
for multiple counties and municipalities; and22
WHEREAS, Carleen Cumberbatch was appointed to the Housing Autho rity of DeKalb23
County Board of Commissioners in 2003, where she now serves as board chair; and24
WHEREAS, she has additionally served as a member of the Atlanta Regional Commission25
Advisory Committee on Aging since 2001, commissioner for the NAHRO Board from 201026
to 2021, representative for DeKalb County's District 31 in the Georgia Silver Hair27
Legislature, and more; and28
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this outstand ing individual be29
appropriately honored during this special time.30
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body31
recognize and commend Carleen Cumberbatch, the 2025 Distinguished Older Georgian, and32
extend best wishes for future health and happiness.33
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed34
to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for di stribution to Carleen35
Cumberbatch.36
