25 LC 112 3114 House Resolution 349 By: Representative Hitchens of the 161st A RESOLUTION Commending Georgia Military College on its 145th anniversary; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, established on October 14, 1879, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly,2 Georgia Military College (GMC) builds upon its distinguished military heritage, grounded3 in the core values of duty, honor, and country, to provide hope and opportunity through4 education while developing students across Georgia into authentic servant leaders; and5 WHEREAS, GMC is a unique state authority with a steadfast commi tment to providing6 pathways of opportunity for students across Georgia, ensuring accessibility and affordability7 in education, with over 97 percent of its students being Georgia residents; and8 WHEREAS, GMC's Preparatory School, located in Milledgeville, se rves K-12 students,9 preparing them for higher education by fostering academic excellence, leadership, character10 development, and competitive athletics and fine arts, with graduates pursuing college degrees11 at distinguished colleges and universities within Georgia and across the nation; and12 WHEREAS, in the GMC Junior College, 80 percent of the student b ody consists of13 first-generation and/or low-income students, highlighting the i nstitution's vital role in14 H. R. 349 - 1 - 25 LC 112 3114 fostering accessibility, opportunity, and workforce development in Georgia's higher15 education system; and16 WHEREAS, since its founding, GMC has remained an open-admissions institution, ensuring17 that education remains accessible to all individuals seeking to advance their opportunities;18 and19 WHEREAS, GMC serves primarily commuter students, offers nine ju nior college athletic20 programs, and maintains its residential Corps of Cadets, making it one of only four military21 junior colleges in the nation that can commission officers in the United States Army within22 two years through its ROTC program; and23 WHEREAS, GMC's Corps of Cadets offers a prestigious and highly successful United States24 Service Academy Prep Program, with a 95 percent success rate, p reparing cadets to gain25 admission to one of our nation's prestigious academies, earning their foundation in Georgia26 at GMC; and27 WHEREAS, GMC operates eight satellite locations across Georgia, significantly expanding28 access to higher education for students throughout the state; and29 WHEREAS, GMC's Global Online Leadership College has propelled the institution into the30 future, providing flexible and accessible educational opportuni ties for working adults,31 active-duty military members, and their families; and32 WHEREAS, the continued achievements and milestones of GMC stand as a testament to the33 dedication and hard work of its faculty, staff, students, and alumni.34 H. R. 349 - 2 - 25 LC 112 3114 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that35 the members of this body commend Georgia Military College upon its 145th anniversary and36 extend best wishes for its continued contributions to Milledgeville, the State of Georgia, and37 the nation.38 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized39 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution ava ilable for distribution to40 Georgia Military College.41 H.
