25 LC 112 3121 Senate Resolution 250 By: Senators Jones of the 10th, Jackson of the 41st, Parent of the 44th, Harrell of the 40th, Anderson of the 43rd and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing February 26, 2025, as DeKalb Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, established on December 9, 1822, as Georgia's 56th county, DeKalb County has2 a legacy of progress, economic development, and civic leadership, making it a cornerstone3 of Georgia's cultural and economic landscape; and4 WHEREAS, covering 269 square miles, DeKalb County is strategically positioned between5 Atlanta and Athens, serving as a key corridor for commerce, education, and innovation along6 Georgia's Continental Divide; and7 WHEREAS, DeKalb County is home to world-class educational insti tutions, including8 Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Oglethorpe University, a nd Georgia Piedmont9 Technical College, reinforcing its status as a leader in higher education and workforce10 development; and11 WHEREAS, DeKalb County serves as a global hub for healthcare an d scientific research,12 housing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory Healthcare, and Children's13 Healthcare of Atlanta, while also contributing to Grady Hospital's mission of accessible and14 high-quality healthcare; and15 S. R. 250 - 1 - 25 LC 112 3121 WHEREAS, DeKalb County is one of Georgia's most diverse communi ties, representing16 over 100 nationalities and more than 140 spoken languages, whic h enriches the county's17 cultural, economic, and social fabric; and18 WHEREAS, DeKalb County is an economic powerhouse, leading in technology, film and19 entertainment, logistics, and advanced manufacturing while also being home to Georgia's20 second-busiest airport, DeKalb-Peachtree Airport; and21 WHEREAS, under the historic leadership of CEO Lorraine Cochran- Johnson, the first22 African American woman elected as Chief Executive Officer of DeKalb County, the county23 continues to set the standard for strong governance and economic prosperity.24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body25 recognize February 26, 2025, as DeKalb Day at the state capitol, celebrating the county's rich26 history, residents, dynamic diversity, and ongoing commitment t o innovation, economic27 development, and excellence in governance.28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed29 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the30 press.31 S.
