A RESOLUTION
Commending Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. for its 112 years of service and recognizing1
March 3, 2025, as Delta Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.2
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is a public service or ganization founded on3
January 13, 1913, by 22 visionary collegiate women at Howard University in Washington,4
D.C.; and5
WHEREAS, the founding members included Osceola Macarthy Adams, Marguerite Young6
Alexander, Winona Cargile Alexander, Ethel Cuff Black, Bertha P itts Campbell, Zephyr7
Chisom Carter, Edna Brown Coleman, Jessie McGuire Dent, Frederica Chase Dodd, Myra8
Davis Hemmings, Olive Jones, Jimmie Bugg Middleton, Pauline Oberdorfer Minor, Vashti9
Turley Murphy, Naomi Sewell Richardson, Mamie Reddy Rose, Eliza P. Shippen, Florence10
Letcher Toms, Ethel Carr Watson, Wertie Blackwell Weaver, Madree Penn White, and Edith11
Motte Young; and12
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is a sisterhood of col lege educated women13
dedicated to academic excellence and committed to community service; and14

WHEREAS, more than 300,000 women have joined the organization t o implement the15
sorority's mission through its five point programmatic thrust o f educational development,16
economic development, political awareness and involvement, phys ical and mental health,17
and international awareness and involvement; and18
WHEREAS, the sorority has more than 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the19
United States as well as internationally, including Germany, En gland, Japan, the Virgin20
Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and21
WHEREAS, Delta Days at Georgia State Capitol has instituted the Georganna Sinkfield22
Servant Leadership Award in recognition of her service as the longest serving female in the23
history of the Georgia General Assembly; the Pota E. Coston Trailblazer Award, named for24
the first African American female commissioner elected in Fayette County, Georgia; and the25
Social Action Collegiate Change Agent Award, which is awarded t o a student actively26
involved in student government association leadership or partne r organizations who27
demonstrates the ability to create change in either the campus or community environment;28
and29
WHEREAS, members of this illustrious sisterhood serve as electe d officials, lend support30
to various local communities, and lead dialogues on public poli cy throughout their31
communities; and32
WHEREAS, its members are committed to initiatives in alignment with its theme of "Our33
Future, Our Fight: Making an impact for 112 years through sisterhood, scholarship, service,34
and social action!," allowing the members to continue its legac y of social justice through35
civic engagement.36

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that37
the members of this body commend the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. for its 11238
years of continued commitment to public service and its work in making the State of Georgia39
a better place in which to live and recognize March 3, 2025, as Delta Day at the state capitol.40
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized41
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Delta42
Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.43
