25 LC 112 3331 Senate Resolution 372 By: Senators Kirkpatrick of the 32nd, Watson of the 1st, Harrell of the 40th, Setzler of the 37th, Orrock of the 36th and others A RESOLUTION Expressing support for increased awareness of stomach cancer; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, stomach cancer, known as gastric cancer, is the fifth most common cancer2 globally and the fourth leading cause of cancer death worldwide; and3 WHEREAS, stomach cancer, accounts for about 1.5 percent of all new cancers diagnosed4 in the United States each year; and5 WHEREAS, 26,890 new cases of stomach cancer were reported in 2024; and6 WHEREAS, there are disparities in stomach cancer incidence and mortality among racial and7 ethnic groups in the United States; and8 WHEREAS, while there has been a decline in stomach cancer incid ence, the lack of9 awareness and focus on risk factors and early detection through screening and surveillance10 may cause individuals at high risk for the disease to dismiss their symptoms; and11 WHEREAS, Georgia ranks 11th in mortality from stomach cancer; and12 S. R. 372 - 1 - 25 LC 112 3331 WHEREAS, increased advocacy, awareness, research and education may bring improved13 outcomes for patients in earlier detection and treatment.14 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body15 express support for increased awareness of stomach cancer and r ecognize that such16 awareness may lead to earlier detection for patients.17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed18 to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the19 press.20 S.
