25 LC 129 0396 Senate Resolution 459 By: Senators Wicks of the 34th, Rahman of the 5th, Harrell of t he 40th, Mangham of the 55th, James of the 28th and others A RESOLUTION Honoring and recognizing Edith Marie McGuire; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, Edith Marie McGuire was born June 3, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up2 in the Rockdale Community; and 3 WHEREAS, after graduating from Archer High School, she attended Tennessee State4 University, became a TSU Tigerbelle, and joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; and5 WHEREAS, under Coach Ed Temple, Edith began her Olympic journey at the 19636 Pan-American Games in São Paulo, Brazil, where she won first place in the 100m and the7 400m relay; and8 WHEREAS, Edith was the top female sprinter, winning six AAU Cha mpionships over9 several years, and is the only American female ever to hold thr ee AAU titles at different10 times, in the 100m, 200m, and the long jump, making her an AAU All-American in all three11 events; and12 WHEREAS, in 1964, she was among the 10 finalists for the James E. Sullivan Award, given13 to the Outstanding Amateur Athlete of the Year in the United States; and14 S. R. 459 - 1 - 25 LC 129 0396 WHEREAS, in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Edith won an Oly mpic gold medal in15 the 200m, and silver medals in the 100m and 400m relay, earning her the title of second16 African American female to win 3 medals in the same Olympic Games; and17 WHEREAS, Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr., declared January 25, 19 65, as Edith McGuire18 Day, and the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce awarded Edith the Native Daughter Trophy; and 19 WHEREAS, under President Lyndon B. Johnson's Administration, Edith was appointed as20 a Goodwill Ambassador to East Africa, and in 2016, she was awar ded the Lifetime21 Achievement Award from President Barack Obama; and 22 WHEREAS, she received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award for outstanding athletes who23 made significant contributions through their career achievements, and was inducted into the24 United States Track and Field Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, Georgia Sports25 Hall of Fame, and the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame; and 26 WHEREAS, currently, she resides is Fayette County with her belo ved husband, Charles,27 whom she manages several McDonald's franchises with; and28 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to honor the outstanding achievements and29 hard work of this exemplary Georgian. 30 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body31 honor and recognize the achievements Edith Marie McGuire and extend sincere best wishes32 for her continues health and happiness.33 S.
