A RESOLUTION
Commemorating 250 years of friendship between the United Kingdom and the State of
Georgia; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, the State of Georgia was founded in 1733 as the last of the original 13 colonies
under a charter granted by King George II of Great Britain, establishing deep historical ties
between Georgia and the United Kingdom; and
WHEREAS, the City of Savannah, Georgia's first settlement, was laid out by General James
Oglethorpe, a British philanthropist and military leader, and it remains a symbol of the shared
heritage between Georgia and the United Kingdom; and
WHEREAS, Georgia and the United Kingdom have maintained strong cultural and economic
connections since colonial times, including trade in goods such as cotton and textiles during
the 18th and 19th centuries; and
WHEREAS, during World War II, Georgia played a vital role in supporting the Allied effort
alongside the United Kingdom through military training at Fort Benning and shipbuilding
in Savannah and Brunswick; and
WHEREAS, today the United Kingdom remains one of Georgia's leading international
partners, with British companies investing in Georgia's economy and Georgia exporting
goods and services to the United Kingdom, spanning industries from logistics and
manufacturing to finance; and
WHEREAS, educational and cultural exchanges, including programs at Georgia universities
and British-American organizations, continue to strengthen mutual understanding and
friendship; and
WHEREAS, the newly formed UK-Georgia Friendship Group has been established to
celebrate and strengthen this historic relationship, fostering deeper ties in trade, culture, and
diplomacy.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that
the members of this body commemorate the 250th anniversary of friendship between the
United Kingdom and the State of Georgia as well as express their support for deepening this
historic partnership, promoting shared values, and expanding opportunities for collaboration
in trade, education, and cultural exchange.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the
Government of the United Kingdom, the British Consulate-General in Atlanta, the public,
and the press.
