## Text

House Resolution 13
By: Representatives Davis of the 87th, Scott of the 76th, Schofield of the 63rd, and Cannon of
the 58th
A RESOLUTION
Recognizing April 8, 2025, as Community Activist Day to acknowledge unsung heroic
activists and their strength, selfless courage, and hopeful actions that create a positive and
much improved future; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, Community Activist Day recognizes individuals with spirit, vision, values,
leadership, and transformational activism who create a better tomorrow for generations yet
to be born; and
WHEREAS, Community Activist Day will focus on "activism" and "activist," which are
terms that date back to the slave revolts of the first century BC in the Roman Empire as well
as the civil actions and new social movements of the 1960s in the United States; and
WHEREAS, activists fight the status quo and challenge injustice to balance the scales of
justice and have a long history of changing the world through reform; and
WHEREAS, activists gather people together and build coalitions to tap into the power of
collaboration and collective strength and demand righteousness and change; collective action
that is purposeful, organized, and sustained over a period of time becomes known as a social
movement; and
WHEREAS, activists are inspirational leaders and role models who possess a mix of
unflagging effort, effective action, and tangible achievement, setting a standard for other
activists to duplicate within communities; and
WHEREAS, activists advocate for fairness, transparency, ethics, and accessibility while
facilitating equity and diversity; they also advocate for all aspects of life such as social
justice agendas, including, but not limited to, civil rights issues, economic development,
environmental justice, health policy, education, criminal justice, voting rights, international
affairs, labor, and youth development.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that
the members of this body recognize April 8, 2025, as Community Activist Day, a day to
celebrate activists throughout history.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the
public and the press.

## Summaries written by Georgia Commons

The following was written by claude-sonnet-5 from the text above and is not part of the resolution. Quote the text, not the summary.

A Georgia House resolution would designate April 8, 2025 as Community Activist Day, honoring community activists and their role in social movements and reform.

### Plain-language summary

This is a ceremonial resolution from the Georgia House of Representatives rather than a bill that changes any law. It recognizes April 8, 2025 as Community Activist Day, a day meant to honor unsung activists for their courage and work toward positive change.
The resolution's preamble traces the history of the words 'activism' and 'activist,' linking them to social movements from ancient times through the 1960s civil rights era in the United States. It states that activists advocate for issues such as civil rights, economic development, environmental justice, health policy, education, criminal justice, voting rights, and youth development. The resolution directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to prepare copies for distribution to the public and the press. It does not create any new law, funding, or requirement.

### What it does

- Designates April 8, 2025 as Community Activist Day in Georgia through a formal House resolution.
- States the purpose of the day as honoring activists for their courage, leadership, and role in social movements.
- Directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to make copies of the resolution available to the public and the press.
- Creates no new statute, funding, or enforceable requirement, since it is a symbolic recognition rather than a law.

### Who it affects

The resolution mainly affects the Georgia House of Representatives itself, through the Clerk's duty to distribute copies. It is a symbolic gesture aimed at community activists and the public, without imposing obligations on any specific agency, business, or individual.

### Why it matters

Because this is a ceremonial resolution rather than a change to Georgia law, it carries no legal or financial consequences. Its main effect is public recognition, giving activists and their work formal acknowledgment from the state legislature on a designated day.

### Key provisions

- The resolved clause formally recognizes April 8, 2025 as Community Activist Day, celebrating activists throughout history.
- A further resolved clause directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to prepare copies for public and press distribution.
- The preamble outlines the historical origins of the term 'activist' and lists social justice areas activists commonly address, such as civil rights, education, and voting rights.
