WHEREAS, Professor Stephen Adébánji “Banji” Akintóye is an eminent African scholar, academic and author from Nigeria, and leading African historian with famous works in the history of the Yorubá people of southwestern Nigeria in West Africa; and WHEREAS, Professor Akintóye started his teaching career in African History at Obafemi Awolowo University, in Ile-lfe, Nigeria in 1966; and WHEREAS, in 1967, Professor Akintóye began teaching a course in the history of the United States of America to students at the university, later earning him the recognition of the United States government and several opportunities to speak at prestigious universities in America; and WHEREAS, by 1974, he was elevated to full professorship of African History and appointed the Director of the Institute of African Studies at Obafemi Awolowo University; and WHEREAS, Professor Akintóye has long been dedicated to constrictive international affairs, promoting rational solutions to the problems of disunity, instability, insecurity and poverty confronting the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and commend Stephen Adébánji Akintóye and extend best wishes for his continued health and happiness.
