House Resolution 1523
By: Representatives Jones of the 60th and Willis of the 55th
A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life of Mrs. Victoria Travis Jackson and dedicating a road in her memory; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS, Mrs. Victoria Travis Jackson devoted her life to fighting for equity and working
alongside some of the most prominent figures in American political and social justice
movements; and
WHEREAS, born in 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia, Mrs. Jackson was educated at the historic
David T. Howard High School, and at the age of 79, she enrolled at the Atlanta Metropolitan
State College to demonstrate that the pursuit of knowledge has no expiration date; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson was a central figure in the movement to tear down the "Peyton
Wall," a concrete symbol of racial segregation in Atlanta; and
WHEREAS, she transformed the City of Atlanta's education landscape and opportunities by
demanding and securing better textbooks and facilities for underserved communities; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson collaborated with numerous civil rights icons and leaders,
including Mayor Maynard Jackson and Congressman John Lewis; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Jackson's life work serves as an enduring inspiration for current and future
generations to continue the vital task of creating a more just and equitable society and it is
abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be
appropriately recognized by dedicating a road in her memory.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the portion of State Route 139 from State Route 280 to
Fairburn Road in Fulton County is dedicated as the Victoria Travis Jackson Memorial
Highway.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and
directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Victoria Travis Jackson
Memorial Highway.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the
family of Mrs. Victoria Travis Jackson and to the Department of Transportation.
