A RESOLUTION

Honoring Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones for her historic leadership and lasting contributions to the State of Georgia; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the month of March is designated as Women's History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women who have broken barriers and paved the way for future generations; and

WHEREAS, Jan Slaughter Jones, born in Warner Robins, Georgia, and a proud graduate of the University of Georgia and Georgia State University, has dedicated her career to public service, bringing with her the values of her upbringing as the granddaughter of farmers and the daughter of a career soldier; and

WHEREAS, first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2002, Representative Jones has served the citizens of House District 47 with distinction, fiercely advocating for education reform, fiscal responsibility, and policies that bring government closer to the people; and

WHEREAS, in January 2010, Representative Jones shattered the marble ceiling of the Georgia State Capitol by being elected Speaker Pro Tempore, becoming the first woman to serve in that role and the highest-ranking woman in Georgia legislative history at the time; and

WHEREAS, following the passing of Speaker David Ralston in November 2022, Jan Jones made Her-Story once again when she was elevated to become the first woman to serve as Acting Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, leading the chamber with steady resolve during a period of transition until January 2023; and

WHEREAS, throughout her tenure, Speaker Pro Tempore Jones has demonstrated unwavering leadership, navigating complex legislative battles ranging from education reform and election integrity to economic development, all while mentoring the next generation of leaders; and

WHEREAS, her legacy as a trailblazer, a devoted public servant, and a role model for women and girls across Georgia serves as an enduring inspiration.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones for her historic tenure as Acting Speaker and her continuous service as Speaker Pro Tempore, celebrating her as a pioneer who has expanded the role of women in Georgia's leadership. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, during this year's Women's History Month, the members of this body honor her dedication to the constituents of District 47, her family—including her husband, Kalin, as well as their four children and four grandchildren—and her profound impact on the State of Georgia. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones.
