A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and commending Dr. Daniel Black; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Dr. Daniel Black is a nationally renowned and award-winning novelist, scholar, and community leader; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Black, who lives in Atlanta, is a professor of African American studies and English at his alma mater Clark Atlanta University as well as at Morehouse College, where he has mentored writers and scholars since 1993; and

WHEREAS, a prolific writer, his literary works include They Tell Me of a Home, The Sacred Place, Perfect Peace, Twelve Gates to the City, The Coming, and Listen to the Lambs, among many others; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Black has been nominated for the Townsend Literary Prize, the Ernest J. Gaines Award, the Ferro-Grumley Literary Prize, the Lambda Literary Award, and the Georgia Author of the Year Prize; in addition, he was awarded the Writer's Award from the Middle-Atlantic Writers Association; and

WHEREAS, his novel, Perfect Peace, was chosen as the 2014 selection for "If All Arkansas Read the Same Book" by the Arkansas Center for the Book at the Arkansas State Library as well as earned him Author of the Year in 2011 from the Go on Girl! Book Club; and

WHEREAS, he is the founder of the Ndugu and Nzinga Rites of Passage Nation, a mentoring society that teaches character and the principles to African-American youth; and

WHEREAS, in May 2024, Dr. Daniel Black delivered a viral commencement speech address for Clark Atlanta University, where he shared an encouraging message to graduates that assured them that their accomplishments made them part of a legacy; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the remarkable accomplishments of this extraordinary gentleman be appropriately honored.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize and commend Dr. Daniel Black for his outstanding impact on the State of Georgia and extend their sincere best wishes for his continued health, happiness, and success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Dr. Daniel Black.
