## Text

House Resolution 1664
By: Representatives Wade of the 9th and Chastain of the 7th
A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life of Mr. General Wallace and dedicating an intersection in his memory; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS, the Wallace family's connection to Dawson County, Georgia, began in the
1880's when Ertus and Octavia Wallace established their home near present-day State Route
400 and State Route 136; and
WHEREAS, the Wallace family operated a number of important local businesses on the
property, including a steam engine-powered sawmill that supplied lumber to the surrounding
region, as well as a corn mill, general store, and gasoline pump; and
WHEREAS, the Wallace family operated a general store from their homestead, providing
essential goods and services to area residents until the construction of their stand-alone
building in the 1920's which became the centerpiece of a thriving community hub that served
generations of residents until the store's closure in the 1950's; and
WHEREAS, the Wallace family property was home to four dwelling structures and also
served the civic life of the surrounding community, functioning as a voting precinct and
polling location until the early 1960's; and
WHEREAS, in the mid-1970's, the Wallace family sold the property to the State of Georgia
to allow for the construction of State Route 400, contributing to the transportation
infrastructure that now serves thousands of Georgians each day; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkable Georgia family be
recognized appropriately by dedicating an intersection in memory of Mr. General Wallace.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the intersection of State Route 400 and State Route 136 in
Dawson County is dedicated as the General Wallace Intersection.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and
directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the General Wallace Intersection.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the
family of Mr. General Wallace and to the Department of Transportation.

## Summaries written by Georgia Commons

The following was written by claude-sonnet-5 from the text above and is not part of the resolution. Quote the text, not the summary.

A House resolution from the Georgia General Assembly would name the intersection of State Route 400 and State Route 136 in Dawson County the General Wallace Intersection, honoring the Wallace family's local history.

### Plain-language summary

This resolution honors Mr. General Wallace and his family, who settled near what is now the intersection of State Route 400 and State Route 136 in Dawson County in the 1880s. The Wallace family ran a sawmill, corn mill, general store, and gas pump on their property, and their land also served as a community voting precinct until the early 1960s. In the mid-1970s the family sold the land to the state for the construction of State Route 400.
The resolution formally dedicates the intersection of State Route 400 and State Route 136 as the General Wallace Intersection. It directs the Georgia Department of Transportation to put up and maintain signs marking the dedication, and directs the Clerk of the House to send copies of the resolution to the Wallace family and to the Department of Transportation.

### What it does

- Dedicates the intersection of State Route 400 and State Route 136 in Dawson County as the General Wallace Intersection.
- Directs the Georgia Department of Transportation to erect and maintain signs marking the dedicated intersection.
- Directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to send copies of the resolution to the Wallace family and the Department of Transportation.

### Who it affects

The resolution primarily affects the Wallace family, who are honored by the naming, the Georgia Department of Transportation, which must install and maintain the commemorative signage, and residents and travelers in Dawson County who will see the new intersection name.

### Why it matters

While largely symbolic, the resolution results in an actual state agency action: the Department of Transportation must put up physical signage at a specific Georgia intersection, permanently marking the Wallace family's local history for residents and travelers passing through Dawson County.

### Key provisions

- The resolution's preamble recounts the Wallace family's history in Dawson County from the 1880s through the sale of their land to the state in the 1970s for State Route 400.
- The first resolving clause dedicates the intersection of State Route 400 and State Route 136 in Dawson County as the General Wallace Intersection.
- The second resolving clause authorizes and directs the Department of Transportation to erect and maintain appropriate signs for the dedication.
- The final clause directs the Clerk of the House to distribute copies of the resolution to the Wallace family and the Department of Transportation.
