A RESOLUTION
Honoring the veterans of World War I and dedicating a bridge in their memory; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, our nation's security continues to rely on patriotic men and women who put their personal lives on hold in order to place themselves in harm's way to protect the freedom that all United States citizens cherish; and
WHEREAS, United States military veterans of World War I demonstrated a deep personal commitment to protecting democracy and a willingness to sacrifice their own personal safety and comfort to ensure the well-being of their fellow man; and
WHEREAS, the state of Georgia played a significant role during America's participation in World War I, contributing more than 100,000 men and women to the war effort and holding more training camps than any other state; and
WHEREAS, on Armistice Day, November 11, 1921, more than 1,000 Thomas County citizens and veterans gathered around the newly constructed bridge over Ochlockonee River on State Route 3 ALT for a dedication program to name the bridge "Memorial Bridge" but the bridge dedication was not preserved when the bridge was rebuilt in 1941; and
WHEREAS, it is important that World War I veterans are thanked for their selfless service to this nation and honored for their commitment to protecting the people and ideals of the United States; and
WHEREAS, World War I veterans embodied the spirit of service, finding meaning in something greater than themselves, and it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments and sacrifices of these remarkable and distinguished Americans be honored appropriately.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the bridge on State Route 3 ALT over the Ochlockonee River in Thomas County is dedicated as the World War I Veterans Memorial Bridge. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the World War I Veterans Memorial Bridge.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the board of commissioners of Thomas County and to the Department of Transportation.
