A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending Steven Gregory Mapes; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, on February 13, 2026, off-duty Fire Captain Steven Gregory Mapes
demonstrated extraordinary courage and professionalism when he heroically helped in saving
the life of a hockey player who suffered from sudden cardiac arrest; and
WHEREAS, despite being off-duty at the time, he immediately placed his training
experience into action; and
WHEREAS, Captain Mapes, a firefighter and paramedic with Paulding County Fire and
Rescue, immediately recognized the emergency, and without hesitation called for an AED,
and began CPR while players, referees, and arena staff assisted; and
WHEREAS, the quick and heroic actions of Captain Mapes played a vital role in the
lifesaving efforts that day, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of bystander
response during cardiac emergencies; and
WHEREAS, Captain Mapes actions reflect the highest ideals of public service and exemplify
the unwavering commitment that first responders make to upholding the safety of the citizens
of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, his extraordinary actions serve as an inspiring example of professionalism,
courage, and the profound impact one individual can make in a moment of crisis.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that
the members of this body recognize and commend Steven Gregory Mapes and express their
utmost appreciation for having so purely and truly defined for others the meaning of public
servant.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to
Steven Gregory Mapes.
