By: Representatives Blackmon of the 146th, Williams of the 148th, and Hitchens of the 161st
A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life of F.H.P. Trooper Charles Eugene "Gene" Campbell and dedicating a road

## Summaries written by Georgia Commons

The following was written by claude-sonnet-5 from the text above and is not part of the resolution. Quote the text, not the summary.

A Georgia House resolution would name a stretch of State Route 247 in Houston and Pulaski counties the F.H.P. Trooper Charles Eugene "Gene" Campbell Memorial Highway, honoring a Florida Highway Patrol officer killed in the line of duty.

### Plain-language summary

This resolution honors F.H.P. Trooper Charles Eugene "Gene" Campbell, who served nine years as a Florida Highway Patrol officer before being killed in 1974 after being taken hostage during a traffic stop in Perry, Florida.
The resolution dedicates the portion of State Route 247 running from the bridge over Big Indian Creek in Houston County to Buck Creek Road in Pulaski County as the F.H.P. Trooper Charles Eugene "Gene" Campbell Memorial Highway. It directs the Georgia Department of Transportation to put up and maintain signs marking the dedication, and it directs the Clerk of the House to send copies of the resolution to Trooper Campbell's family and to the Department of Transportation.

### What it does

- Dedicates the stretch of State Route 247 between the Big Indian Creek bridge in Houston County and Buck Creek Road in Pulaski County as a memorial highway.
- Directs the Georgia Department of Transportation to erect and maintain signs marking the memorial highway designation.
- Directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to distribute copies of the resolution to Trooper Campbell's family and the Department of Transportation.

### Who it affects

The designation directly affects the Georgia Department of Transportation, which must install and maintain signage, and drivers on that stretch of State Route 247 in Houston and Pulaski counties. It also honors the family of Trooper Charles Eugene Campbell.

### Why it matters

The resolution does not change any law, tax, or regulation; its practical effect is limited to new highway signage and a formal, symbolic honor for a law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty, funded through the Department of Transportation's normal sign-maintenance work.

### Key provisions

- The resolving clause dedicates the named segment of State Route 247, from the Big Indian Creek bridge in Houston County to Buck Creek Road in Pulaski County, as the memorial highway.
- A further resolved clause authorizes and directs the Department of Transportation to erect and maintain appropriate signs for the dedication.
- A further resolved clause directs the Clerk of the House to send copies of the resolution to Campbell's family and the Department of Transportation.
