A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life of Councilman Alphonso Thomas and dedicating an intersection in his memory; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Councilman Alphonso Thomas has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that he has played in leadership and his deep personal commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and

WHEREAS, Councilman Thomas attended Smith Barnes Elementary School, the Henry County Training School in McDonough, and earned a football scholarship to Fort Valley State University; and

WHEREAS, affectionately known as "Blue," Councilman Thomas served the City of Stockbridge for more than 35 years; and

WHEREAS, he was employed by the Economic Opportunity Authority as a youth organizer at Perry Holmes where he mentored youth, and his commitment to civic engagement also extended through his membership in the Esquire Fraternity and Fort Valley State alumni; and

WHEREAS, a man of deep and abiding faith, Councilman Thomas was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, Councilman Thomas was recognized with numerous honors, including the Henry County NAACP Freedom Fund Community Service award, the Eagle Scout Mentor's Pin from Troop #65, and the Zeta Mu Nu Chapter Omega Citizen of the year award; and

WHEREAS, he was known for his principled leadership, collaborative spirit, and commitment to public service, earning respect from colleagues and citizens alike; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized by dedicating an intersection in his memory.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL

ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the intersection of State Route 42/US-23 and East Atlanta Road in Henry County is dedicated as the Councilman Alphonso Thomas Memorial Intersection.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Councilman Alphonso Thomas Memorial Intersection.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the family of Councilman Alphonso Thomas and to the Department of Transportation.
