A RESOLUTION
Recognizing Union County as the Sorghum Capital of Georgia; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, Union County, Georgia, has been involved with the production of sorghum
syrup since the 1850s; and
WHEREAS, Union County has hosted sorghum festivals for over 57 years dating back to its
inaugural festival in 1969, preserving the Appalachian heritage and tradition of sorghum
production in the mountains; and
WHEREAS, the farmers and sorghum producers in Union County have been recognized
nationally for the quality of the sweet sorghum they produce; and
WHEREAS, Union County sorghum syrup continues to be included in many of our favorite
foods and beverages as a sweetener and flavoring, ensuring that the rich heritage of sorghum
production and the county's agricultural roots will continue to grow; and
WHEREAS, generations of sorghum farmers in Union County have contributed greatly to
the tourism and economic impact in the State of Georgia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that
the members of this body recognize Union County as the Sorghum Capital of Georgia in
honor of its historic agricultural legacy.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the
public and the press.
