A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the Honorable Nancy Denson and dedicating an interchange in her honor; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS, the Honorable Nancy Denson has long been recognized by the citizens of this
state for the vital role that she plays in leadership in this state and her deep personal
commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Denson has been a resident of Athens, Georgia, since 1966, moving from
Memphis, Tennessee, and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, she was elected as the first woman to serve on the Athens City Council in 1980,
served as tax commissioner from 1985 to 2010, and served as the mayor from 2011 to 2017;
and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Denson was active with the Association of County Commissioners of
Georgia and the Georgia Municipal Association; and
WHEREAS, her leadership and guidance has been instrumental to numerous civic
organizations in Athens; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Denson has been recognized with numerous honors and accolades,
including an Athena Award from the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, a Lifetime
Volunteer Award from Athens Junior League, an Action Hero from Action Ministries, and
Top Dawg from the University of Georgia Alumni Association; and
WHEREAS, her love and support has uplifted the lives of her late husband, Bob; her children
Bobby, Diane, Margaret, and Kathleen; and her grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this
remarkable and distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized by dedicating an
interchange in her honor.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND ENACTED BY THE GENERAL
ASSEMBLY OF GEORGIA that the western interchange of State Route 10 Loop and State
Route 10/US-78 BUS in Athens-Clarke County is dedicated as the Mayor Nancy Denson
Interchange.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation is authorized and
directed to erect and maintain appropriate signs dedicating the Mayor Nancy Denson
Interchange.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the
Honorable Nancy Denson and the Department of Transportation.
