A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending the 90th annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival is one of the oldest and most beloved traditions
in the City of Atlanta, held annually in Piedmont Park and serving as a signature celebration
of springtime in Georgia; and
WHEREAS, the Atlanta Dogwood Festival was first established in 1936 under the leadership
of Walter Rich, founder of Rich's Department Store, as an effort to promote the City of
Atlanta and highlight the natural beauty of its blooming dogwood trees; and
WHEREAS, the festival was created during the era of the Great Depression with the purpose
of lifting community spirits, encouraging civic pride, and drawing national and international
attention to Atlanta as a vibrant and growing city; and
WHEREAS, early organizers, including local garden clubs and civic leaders, undertook a

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the
organizers of the Atlanta Dogwood Festival.
