House Resolution 321

A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending the STEM education and workforce development initiatives
through the STEM Summit held on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology; and
for other purposes.
WHEREAS, opportunities for career development are due in large part to the varied
education and training available at all levels, including high school career academies,
workplace apprenticeships, Georgia's renowned system of technical colleges, and prestigious
public universities; and
WHEREAS, a recent analysis of STEM occupations nationwide by Science is US found that
the number of STEM jobs in Georgia increased by 186,000 between 2017 and 2021, a 9.6
percent increase, which was twice the national average; and
WHEREAS, Georgia's 2.1 million STEM professionals represent one-third of the state's
labor force and account for 39 percent of the state's gross domestic product; and
WHEREAS, 56 percent of Georgia's STEM professionals do not have a bachelor's degree,
instead pursuing their training through technical colleges, the military, and vocational and
other technology education programs; and
WHEREAS, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce
are great partners in identifying high-demand careers needed for the businesses of today and
those projected in the future; and
WHEREAS, the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia
have effectively and efficiently adjusted curriculum and investments of state dollars in STEM
education programming; and
WHEREAS, all meaningful jobs provide value, and career paths need to be attainable
through many avenues. Opportunities for STEM professionals are on the rise, and Georgia
is well positioned to deliver for businesses across the state; and
WHEREAS, STEM jobs are a growing factor in the equation for Georgia's long-term
success, and education and workforce training are key.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that
the members of this body commend STEM students, educators, and partner organizations for
highlighting the many opportunities for a STEM workforce to address the needs of a growing
Georgia.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the
public and the press.
