A RESOLUTION
Honoring the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Iota Eta Chapter on its 50th
Chartering Anniversary; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Iota Eta Chapter was chartered
on January 11, 1975, at Mercer University's Macon campus by 17 trailblazing women
dedicated to sisterhood, scholarship, and service; and
WHEREAS, the establishment of this historic chapter at Mercer University marked a
significant milestone in the advancement of diversity, leadership, and community
engagement on campus; and
WHEREAS, for five decades, the Iota Eta Chapter has upheld the principles of Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, through its commitment to academic excellence, leadership
development, and impactful service initiatives that have enriched both the Mercer University
community and the greater Macon area; and
WHEREAS, the contributions of the 17 charter members—Carolyn Chisholm, Berdell Cook,
Juanita Cook, Loretta Grier, Phyllis Hancock, Deborah James, Vanessa James, Cheryle
Johnson, Deborah Johnson, Shirley Jones, Naomi McMillan, Sherron McQueen, Benita
Marks, Wynona Sharp, Elvenia Winchester, Gwendolyn Wright, and Lorenia Wright—laid
a strong foundation that continues to inspire generations of young women to lead with
purpose and serve with dedication; and
WHEREAS, with 41 current members, the Iota Eta Chapter remains a beacon of sisterhood
and service, fostering an environment that encourages academic achievement, professional
growth, and civic responsibility; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated, Iota Eta Chapter be appropriately honored for its outstanding contributions in
promoting leadership, education, and service throughout its 50-year history.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that
the members of this body honor and congratulate the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated, Iota Eta Chapter on its 50th Chartering Anniversary at Mercer University,
commend its members both past and present for their dedication to service and scholarship,
and extend best wishes for continued success in the years ahead.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Iota Eta Chapter.
