House Resolution 422 By: Representatives Drenner of the 85th, Davis of the 87th, Tran of the 80th, Lewis-Ward of the 115th, Draper of the 90th, and others A RESOLUTION Recognizing February 26, 2025, as DeKalb Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, established on December 9, 1822, as Georgia's 56th county, DeKalb County has a legacy of progress, economic development, and civic leadership, making it a cornerstone of Georgia's cultural and economic landscape; and WHEREAS, covering 269 square miles, DeKalb County is strategically positioned between Atlanta and Athens, serving as a key corridor for commerce, education, and innovation along Georgia's Continental Divide; and WHEREAS, DeKalb County is home to world-class educational institutions, including Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Oglethorpe University, and Georgia Piedmont Technical College, reinforcing its status as a leader in higher education and workforce development; and WHEREAS, DeKalb County serves as a global hub for healthcare and scientific research, housing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory Healthcare, and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, while also contributing to Grady Hospital's mission of accessible and high-quality healthcare; and WHEREAS, DeKalb County is one of Georgia's most diverse communities, representing over 100 nationalities and more than 140 spoken languages, which enriches the county's cultural, economic, and social fabric; and WHEREAS, DeKalb County is an economic powerhouse, leading in technology, film and entertainment, logistics, and advanced manufacturing while also being home to Georgia's second-busiest airport, DeKalb-Peachtree Airport; and WHEREAS, under the historic leadership of CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, the first African American woman elected as Chief Executive Officer of DeKalb County, the county continues to set the standard for strong governance and economic prosperity. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize February 26, 2025, as DeKalb Day at the state capitol, celebrating the county's rich history, residents, dynamic diversity, and ongoing commitment to innovation, economic development, and excellence in governance. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the press.
