## Summaries written by Georgia Commons

The following was written by claude-sonnet-5 from the text above and is not part of the resolution. Quote the text, not the summary.

A Georgia House resolution formally commends all veterans and their families in the state, honoring their military service and highlighting current state income tax exemptions for military retirement pay.

### Plain-language summary

This resolution from the Georgia House of Representatives honors the more than 600,000 veterans who have made Georgia their home. It praises their service and sacrifice and notes existing state tax breaks for military retirement income, such as exemptions of up to $17,500 a year for veterans under 62 and up to $35,000 a year for those between 62 and 65.
The resolution does not change any law itself. It commends veterans and their families for their service and directs the Clerk of the House to make copies available to the public and press. It also mentions that increasing these tax exemptions would further honor veterans, but it does not enact any such increase.

### What it does

- Formally commends and honors all Georgia veterans and their families for their military service.
- Describes existing state income tax exemptions on military retirement pay, without changing them.
- Directs the Clerk of the House of Representatives to distribute copies of the resolution to the public and press.
- Expresses the legislature's appreciation for the more than 600,000 veterans living in Georgia.

### Who it affects

Georgia veterans of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, Army Reserve, and National Guard, along with their families, are the subject of this resolution's praise and recognition.

### Why it matters

The resolution carries symbolic weight rather than legal effect. It publicly recognizes veterans' service and draws attention to existing tax exemptions on military retirement income, which could set the stage for future legislation to expand those benefits.

### Key provisions

- The whereas clauses describe current state tax exemptions: up to $17,500 a year for veterans under 62, with an additional $17,500 possible, and up to $35,000 a year for those between 62 and 65.
- The resolution formally commends all Georgia veterans and their efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service.
- The resolution directs the Clerk of the House to prepare copies for distribution to the public and press.
- The resolution notes that increasing the described tax exemptions would honor veterans' service, without itself enacting any change.
