House Resolution 62 By: Representatives Au of the 50th, Tran of the 80th, Park of the 107th, Lim of the 98th, and Hong of the 103rd A RESOLUTION Commending Mary D'Souza Sequeira; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, Mary D'Souza Sequeira, an Indian female Olympian, distinguished herself as a pioneer in international sports, representing India in track and field as well as field hockey; and WHEREAS, she competed in the women's 100 and 200 meters at the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics as part of the first female contingent to represent India at the Olympics; and WHEREAS, at the 1951 Asian Games, Mary D'Souza Sequeira earned a Bronze Medal in the 200 meters and a Silver Medal in the 4x100 meter relay; and WHEREAS, she made history at the 1954 Asian Games by competing in the 4x100 meter relay and becoming one of the first Indian women to win a Gold Medal alongside her teammates; and WHEREAS, in 2013, Mary D'Souza Sequeira was honored with the Dhyan Chand Award by the Government of India in recognition of her lifetime achievements in sport and her outstanding contributions to athletics; and WHEREAS, this distinguished gentlewoman has given inspiration to many through her high ideals, morals, and deep concern for her fellow citizens, and she possesses the vast wisdom which only comes through experience and the strength of character which is achieved through overcoming the many challenges of life; and WHEREAS, she is a person of magnanimous strengths with an unimpeachable reputation for integrity, intelligence, fairness, and kindness; and WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this remarkable and distinguished individual be appropriately recognized. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body commend Mary D'Souza Sequeira for her many exemplary athletic achievements as well as extend the most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Mary D'Souza Sequeira.
