SR 1038: 23rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration by the Daughters of Mary Magdalene; recognize; Mahammad, Anthony; commend

A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the 23rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration by the Daughters of Mary Magdalene and commending Anthony Mahammad; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and emphasizes cultural pride through events inspired by recollections of our ancestors' and grandparents' struggles against slavery and segregation as well as their fight for freedom, dignity, justice, and equality for generations to come; and

WHEREAS, the Daughters of Mary Magdalene is a nonprofit community organization that serves areas lacking economic, social, and cultural resources by offering educational materials, mentoring, and oral history griots to motivate and help uplift people to reach their full potential; and

WHEREAS, the theme for this year's Juneteenth celebration is "Rebuild, Reconstruct and Re-Educate!"; and

WHEREAS, one of the highlights of the Juneteenth celebration is the Honorees Program, which recognizes ordinary people who exemplify extraordinary character and dedicate their life's work to helping and benefitting children, young adults, and others throughout the community; and

WHEREAS, Anthony Mahammad is being recognized as a 2026 Juneteenth Celebration Honoree; and

WHEREAS, Anthony Mahammad is a Savannah native, and he attended Windsor High School. He was raised in a very nurturing environment and was tutored by the legendary Lucius "Bo" Levett—a highly respected local coach and community leader who made a difference in the Cloverdale Community. Bo Levett organized the Police Athletic Program called PAL, which gave young people an outlet to showcase their talent and ability to play sports. This program gave Anthony the courage and the leadership he needed as a young person to go out and work in his community; and

WHEREAS, Anthony helped in Savannah to organize one of the most famous marches in the United States—the Million Man March. It was one of the largest gatherings of Black men held in Washington, D.C. Upon returning home, Anthony went through the toughest communities using the information and tools he learned to teach and redirect young Black youth towards positive goals; and

WHEREAS, Anthony is affectionately called a quiet hero. His true strength lies in quietness; he prefers to work in the background and he stays away from the frontlines. He has devoted years of community service to the youth and the homeless of Savannah. He says he gets joy by getting to know the people he serves with a hot meal and a kind word; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper to recognize the Daughters of Mary Magdalene for presenting the Juneteenth program in Savannah for more than 23 years, making it the longest-serving Juneteenth celebration in Savannah, and commend Anthony Mahammad as a 2026 Juneteenth Celebration Honoree.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend the Daughters of Mary Magdalene and Anthony Mahammad. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the Daughters of Mary Magdalene and Anthony Mahammad.
