## Summaries written by Georgia Commons

The following was written by claude-sonnet-5 from the text above and is not part of the resolution. Quote the text, not the summary.

A Georgia Senate resolution honors Coach Wesley Willis for leading North Paulding High School's girls basketball team to its first state championship in school history and for being named Coach of the Year.

### Plain-language summary

This is a ceremonial resolution passed by the Georgia Senate, not a change to state law. It recognizes Coach Wesley Willis of North Paulding High School for guiding the girls basketball team to the 2026 GHSA Class 6A State Championship, a 64-58 win over Grayson High School that capped a 30-2 season and marked the school's first basketball state title.
The resolution also notes Willis was named GBCA/GACA 6A Girls Coach of the Year for 2025-2026, following an earlier Coach of the Year recognition after a state runner-up finish the prior season. It directs the Secretary of the Senate to prepare a copy of the resolution for Willis, but it creates no legal requirements, funding, or penalties.

### What it does

- Formally recognizes and commends Coach Wesley Willis for leading North Paulding High School's girls basketball team to the 2026 GHSA Class 6A State Championship.
- Commends Willis for being named GBCA/GACA 6A Girls Coach of the Year for the 2025-2026 season.
- Directs the Secretary of the Senate to prepare a copy of the resolution for distribution to Coach Willis.
- Extends the Senate's best wishes to Willis for continued success, without creating any legal obligation or funding.

### Who it affects

The resolution directly names Coach Wesley Willis, the North Paulding High School girls basketball team, and by extension the Paulding County School District, whose community is recognized for the team's achievement. It has no effect on the general public or other institutions.

### Why it matters

The resolution carries symbolic rather than legal weight. It gives official state recognition to a local coach and team's accomplishment, which can be a meaningful honor for the individual and community, but it does not change any Georgia law, create funding, or impose requirements on anyone.

### Key provisions

- The whereas clauses recount the team's 64-58 win over Grayson High School on March 14, 2026, and its 30-2 season with a No. 1 ranking.
- The whereas clauses note Willis' history with the program, including his time as a boys basketball assistant coach from 2013 to 2019 and his move to lead girls basketball starting in 2019-2020.
- The resolved clause formally commends Willis for his leadership, his Coach of the Year honor, and the state championship win.
- A further resolved clause directs the Secretary of the Senate to make a copy of the resolution available to Willis.
