A RESOLUTION
Recognizing February 19, 2025, as Certified Community Midwife Day at the state capitol;
and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, community midwives have long been recognized by their peers and the citizens
of this state for their major accomplishments and essential role as agents of public safety for
maternal and child health services; and
WHEREAS, the community midwife model serves as an example for maternal and child
health professionals in Georgia and across the nation; and
WHEREAS, these midwives have demonstrated best practices through countless hours
dedicated to their communities, providing accessibility, training, and service while
representing the diversity of midwifery in scope, skill level, culture, languages spoken,
religion, gender, and geography as well as creating educational programs, services, and
models of care that improve outcomes and reduce the risks of premature birth and infant and
maternal morbidity and mortality; and
WHEREAS, Certified Community Midwives are pillars of their communities, providing
alliance, access, and action; earning their titles and recognition through their outstanding
work in community midwifery; and receiving honorary certification by endorsement for their
years of dedicated service and unyielding compassion for humanity; and
WHEREAS, the hallmarks of community midwifery emphasize community-based
interpersonal relationships, health promotion with preventive care, health education,
continuity of care, early recognition of abnormalities, and skillful communication with
collaborative health care teams, including physicians, mid-level providers, and specialists;
and
WHEREAS, this nation has a centuries-old history of midwives providing conscientious care
to women in their communities, with evidence of better outcomes than physicians and
hospital providers for low-risk women; and
WHEREAS, throughout history, revered community-chosen midwives around the world
have provided essential care and support; and
WHEREAS, these midwives are known for their outstanding work in demonstrating how to
keep low-risk mothers and babies safe during the childbearing year.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
commend Tomasina Oliver, UmmSalamaah Abdullah-Zaimah, Corrinna Edwards, Tomecas
Gibson, Nar Sandars, Chasity Millen, Jasmine Bradfield, Hadassah Bellot, Naticia Taylor,
Teri Boles, Morgan Vanbuul, Ayanna Garrick, Bethany Erby, Marsha Ford, Melissa Phillipe,
Erica Glass, Sarah Butler, Samantha Smith, Nicole Gaynor, Tahaira James, and the Doula
of the Divine midwife students for their unselfish dedication to childbearing people and their
families as well as for earning honorary community midwife certification and recognize
February 19, 2025, as Certified Community Midwife Day at the state capitol.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the
press.
