Senate Resolution 333 By: Senators Orrock of the 36th, Halpern of the 39th, Jackson of the 41st, Parent of the 44th, Jones II of the 22nd and others A RESOLUTION Commending Karl Webster Barnes; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, Karl Webster Barnes is a distinguished leader in community development and historic preservation whose efforts have significantly shaped Atlanta's historic neighborhoods and strengthened economic development in underserved areas; and WHEREAS, his more than two decades of leadership includes service on the Zoning Review Board, the Board of Zoning Adjustment, the Atlanta Renewal Community Coordinating Responsible Authority, and the board of Atlanta Emerging Markets Inc., which promotes economic development in underserved communities; and WHEREAS, as a contract consultant and project manager for the Morehouse College Community Revitalization Initiative, he helped secure federal grants that supported entrepreneurship and economic growth in the neighborhoods surrounding the Atlanta University Center Consortium; and WHEREAS, he played a pivotal role in the expansion of the West End Historic District in collaboration with Georgia State Senator Vincent Fort, securing funding under Governor Roy Barnes to strengthen its historical recognition and reach; and WHEREAS, he further conducted research and contributed to the West End Historic District nomination presented to the United States Department of the Interior, the National Park Service, and the Urban Design Commission of the City of Atlanta; and WHEREAS, his dedication to historic preservation led him to chair the Georgia African American Historic Preservation Network, where he has worked to protect significant African American historic sites and contributed to the nomination of the Adair Park Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places; and WHEREAS, he has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Land Use and Zoning Trailblazer Award from the West End Neighborhood Development organization and the Georgia Tech Alumni Association's Trailblazer Award; and WHEREAS, Karl Webster Barnes' efforts have left a lasting impact on Atlanta, ensuring that its historic neighborhoods are preserved while continuing to foster sustainable growth and development, making it fitting and proper that he be appropriately honored. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend Karl Webster Barnes for his many exemplary years of service to community development and historic preservation as well as extend their best wishes for future health, happiness, and success. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Karl Webster Barnes.
