A RESOLUTION
Recognizing March 4, 2025, as Oxford Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, founded in 1836 as Emory College, Oxford College has a long and
distinguished history that reflects its deep connection to the Methodist Church and its integral
role within the broader Emory University community; and
WHEREAS, the college transitioned to its current designation as Oxford College in 1964,
becoming a two-year liberal arts institution dedicated to providing a rigorous academic
foundation for its students; and
WHEREAS, located in Oxford, Georgia, Oxford College offers students a unique educational
experience that combines the benefits of a close-knit campus environment with the vast
resources of a world-renowned research university; and
WHEREAS, Oxford College plays a vital role in the Newton County economy, contributing
more than $80 million annually, attracting over 12,000 visitors, and supporting over 520
local jobs and 1,500 jobs statewide; and
WHEREAS, students at Oxford College are deeply engaged in community service,
partnering with more than 65 local organizations, nonprofits, civic groups, and educational
institutions to contribute over 13,000 volunteer hours each year; and
WHEREAS, Oxford College has remained steadfast in its commitment to academic
excellence, fostering an environment where students benefit from close faculty interactions,
personalized learning experiences, and a strong sense of community; and
WHEREAS, the college has upheld a tradition of intellectual growth, resilience, and service,
shaping students who not only excel academically but also develop socially and personally
through meaningful engagement with their peers and the wider world; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this distinguished academic institution
be appropriately honored during this special time.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
recognize March 4, 2025, as Oxford Day at the state capitol and commend Oxford College
for its rich history, academic excellence, and ongoing contributions to Newton County, the
State of Georgia, and beyond.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Oxford College.
