A RESOLUTION
Recognizing January 27, 2025, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in the State of
Georgia and reaffirming the commitment to combat antisemitism; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, January 27, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of
Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest and most notorious Nazi concentration and extermination
camp, where approximately 1.1 million men, women, and children were systematically
murdered; and
WHEREAS, International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion to honor the
six million Jews and millions of other innocent victims who perished during the Holocaust,
while also serving as a reminder of the enduring need to confront hatred, bigotry, and
antisemitism; and
WHEREAS, antisemitism is on the rise globally, including in the State of Georgia, where
Jewish communities have faced growing incidents of hate and discrimination; and
WHEREAS, on October 7, 2023, the Jewish people endured the deadliest attack against them
since the Holocaust by the terrorist organization Hamas while peacefully living in their
homeland, the State of Israel, underscoring the persistent and dangerous threat of
antisemitism worldwide; and
WHEREAS, the Georgia General Assembly took a critical step in combating antisemitism
by passing House Bill 30 during the previous legislative session, formally adopting the
International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism into
Georgia law; and
WHEREAS, despite this progress, it is imperative that Georgia lawmakers remain vigilant
and proactive in addressing antisemitism in our schools, communities, and public institutions,
ensuring that hate and intolerance have no place in this state; and
WHEREAS, the observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day is not only a time
for reflection but also a call to action to combat contemporary forms of antisemitism and
safeguard the rights and dignity of all people.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
recognize January 27, 2025, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Georgia, honor
the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, condemn all forms of antisemitism and hate, and
reaffirm the commitment to fostering a state that stands firmly against prejudice and
discrimination.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the
press.
