A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and memory of Angela Laverne Stone; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens
with the passing of Angela Laverne Stone on March 1, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Angela Laverne Stone was born on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South
Carolina, and from an early age, she displayed a deep passion for music, beginning her
journey as a Gospel singer at First Nazareth Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, she was a pioneering force in the music industry, rising to prominence in the
late 1970s as a member of the hip-hop trio The Sequence and later achieving critical and
commercial success as a solo artist with multiple gold-certified albums and chart-topping
singles; and
WHEREAS, throughout her illustrious career, she contributed significantly to the evolution
of R&B and neo-soul, earning three Grammy Award nominations, two Soul Train Lady of
Soul Awards, and the Soul Music Icon Award at the Black Music Honors; and
WHEREAS, in addition to her remarkable music career, she performed as an actress in
numerous films, television series, and stage productions, making her film debut in the 2002
comedy film The Hot Chick and her stage debut in 2003 in the role of Big Mama Morton in
the Broadway musical Chicago; and
WHEREAS, Angela Laverne Stone was a woman of profound artistic talent and boundless
generosity, inspiring generations with her music, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to
her craft; and
WHEREAS, a compassionate and gifted individual, Angela Laverne Stone will long be
remembered for her groundbreaking contributions to music and entertainment and will be
deeply missed by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
join in honoring the life and memory of Angela Laverne Stone and express their deepest and
most sincere regret at her passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the family of
Angela Laverne Stone.
