Senate Resolution 717

A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the City of McDonough, Georgia, upon the first annual McDonough Day at the state capitol; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, the City of McDonough, Georgia, was founded in 1823 and named for Naval Officer Commodore Thomas Macdonough; and

WHEREAS, since its incorporation, the City of McDonough has embodied the principles of local self-governance, civic engagement, and responsible stewardship, reflecting the determination and vision of its citizens; and

WHEREAS, McDonough is grounded in a rich history of commerce and transportation, as the city originated as a relay station on the New York City to New Orleans stagecoach line and was connected by other stage lines with Fayetteville and Decatur, and with Macon by way of Jackson; and

WHEREAS, with a population nearing 30,000, McDonough is located in Henry County, Georgia, and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area; and

WHEREAS, the success of the City of McDonough is due in large measure to the dedicated service of its mayor and city council, past and present, city staff, volunteers, business leaders, and engaged residents who have worked collectively to advance the city's growth and prosperity; and

WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that McDonough Day is celebrated at the state capitol in acknowledgment of the outstanding government and community in the City of McDonough.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize the City of McDonough, Georgia, upon the first annual McDonough Day at the state capitol.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the City of McDonough.
