A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band for its longstanding service, musical excellence, and positive impact on the Columbus community; and for other purposes.
WHEREAS, The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band was founded in 1988 as a memorial tribute to Robert M. Barr, beloved director of the Jordan High School Band in Columbus, Georgia, from 1946 to 1962; and
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Robert M. Barr, the Jordan High School Band achieved the highest acclaim, earning numerous state and national titles and establishing a standard of musical excellence that brought pride and distinction to the Columbus community; and
WHEREAS, as a teacher, mentor, and friend, Mr. Barr positively influenced the lives of hundreds of young people and was recognized as one of the 100 most influential people in the Chattahoochee Valley in the 20th century prior to his passing in May 1988; and
WHEREAS, since its founding, The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band has grown into a concert band comprised of more than sixty dedicated volunteer musicians ranging in age from 15 to 94; and
WHEREAS, for 37 years, the band has enriched the cultural life of the community by performing for thousands of citizens, including appearances during the 1996 Summer Olympic events held in Columbus, Georgia, annual July 4th celebrations at the Heard Theatre, and numerous performances supporting charitable efforts such as fundraising initiatives for the Easter Seals Organization; and
WHEREAS, The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band has maintained a distinguished tradition of musical leadership, with Dr. George Corradino serving as its first conductor from 1988 until 2011, followed by Fred Catchings from 2011 until 2023, and currently under the baton of Dr. Oliver C. Boone; and
WHEREAS, The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Robert M. Barr and to the power of volunteerism, artistic excellence, and community engagement in the State of Georgia.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band for its 37 years of dedicated service and outstanding musical contributions to Columbus and the Chattahoochee Valley.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to The Robert "Bob" Barr Community Band.
