## Text

Senate Resolution 827
By: Senators Williams of the 25th, Anderson of the 24th, Goodman of the 8th, Harbin of the
16th, Orrock of the 36th and others
A RESOLUTION
Honoring Georgia's retirees and the Georgia State Retirees Association; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, the Georgia State Retirees Association (GSRA) was established in 2006 and is
a nonprofit organization which advocates for over 50,000 active and retired state employees
and educators within the State of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, GSRA is dedicated to enhancing and promoting education, as well as the
welfare of the entire Georgia state government community relative to the retirement and
health care benefits that are provided to State of Georgia employees; and
WHEREAS, it provides educational opportunities for members, including the exchange of
information, ideas, knowledge, and expertise in all matters affecting the well-being of the
community, including but not limited to retirement and insurance benefits; and
WHEREAS, GSRA recognizes that the two common interests that bind retirees of state
government, local school systems, and the Board of Regents are pension benefits based upon
salary, length of service, and health insurance; and
WHEREAS, GSRA honors the many thousands of individuals who enriched the State by
their dedicated service and advocates for retention and continued excellence by assisting and
encouraging the State to keep its promises to its workforce for retirement and insurance
benefits; and
WHEREAS, this association advocates and provides assistance for those actively serving the
State of Georgia, and for those who provide or have provided service in the education of the
children of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that this exemplary association be honored.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
honor Georgia's retirees and the Georgia State Retirees Association.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the Georgia State
Retirees Association.

## Summaries written by Georgia Commons

The following was written by claude-sonnet-5 from the text above and is not part of the resolution. Quote the text, not the summary.

A Senate resolution honors Georgia's state retirees and the Georgia State Retirees Association for its work advocating on behalf of retired and active state employees and educators.

### Plain-language summary

This resolution is a ceremonial statement from the Georgia Senate rather than a change to state law. It recognizes the Georgia State Retirees Association (GSRA), a nonprofit founded in 2006 that advocates for more than 50,000 active and retired state employees and educators in Georgia.
The resolution describes GSRA's work educating members about retirement and health insurance benefits and its advocacy for the state to honor its commitments to workers' pensions and insurance. The Senate resolves to honor Georgia's retirees and the association, and directs the Secretary of the Senate to send copies of the resolution to GSRA. It does not create, amend, or repeal any law or provide any funding.

### What it does

- Formally honors Georgia's retirees and the Georgia State Retirees Association through a Senate resolution.
- States the Senate's recognition of GSRA's role advocating for over 50,000 active and retired state employees and educators.
- Directs the Secretary of the Senate to prepare and send copies of the resolution to the Georgia State Retirees Association.
- Creates no new law, funding, requirement, or penalty; it is a symbolic statement only.

### Who it affects

The resolution directly names the Georgia State Retirees Association and, more broadly, retired and active Georgia state employees, local school system employees, and Board of Regents personnel whose pension and health insurance benefits the association advocates for.

### Why it matters

Because this is a ceremonial resolution, it has no legal or financial effect on Georgians. Its practical significance is symbolic: it publicly recognizes an advocacy group and the state workforce it represents, without changing pension rules, health benefits, or any state program.

### Key provisions

- The whereas clauses describe GSRA's founding in 2006, its nonprofit status, and its advocacy for over 50,000 active and retired state employees and educators.
- The resolved clause states that the Senate honors Georgia's retirees and the Georgia State Retirees Association.
- A further resolved clause directs the Secretary of the Senate to distribute copies of the resolution to GSRA.
