Senate Resolution 834 By: Senators Rahman of the 5th, Harbison of the 15th, Still of the 48th, Brass of the 6th, Rhett of the 33rd and others ADOPTED SENATE A RESOLUTION Recognizing and commending the outstanding contributions and sacrifices of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, the United States recognized Bangladesh as an independent nation on April 4, 1972, marking 54 years of diplomatic relations and strengthening people to people connection between the two countries; and WHEREAS, tens of thousands of Bangladeshi Americans, including former members of the Bangladesh Army who served with distinction in United Nations Peacekeeping Missions, reside in the State of Georgia and are contributing to every sector of Georgia's economy; and WHEREAS, Bangladesh has been a leading contributor to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations since 1988, beginning with deployment of military observers during the Iran-Iraq war; and WHEREAS, Bangladesh has participated in 63 United Nations Peacekeeping Missions across 43 countries, deploying more than 200,000 uniformed personnel, predominantly from the Bangladesh Army; and WHEREAS, approximately 6,000 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are currently serving in eight ongoing missions around the world; and WHEREAS, at least 174 Bangladeshi peacekeepers have lost their lives and more than 280 have been injured in the line of duty, demonstrating extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and commitment to global peace and security; and WHEREAS, Bangladeshi peacekeepers play a vital role not only in maintaining security but also in protecting civilians, providing humanitarian assistance, supporting infrastructure development, strengthening local security forces, and advancing post-conflict recovery; and WHEREAS, the professionalism, discipline, and humanitarian values demonstrated by Bangladeshi peacekeepers have earned international recognition and enhanced Bangladesh's standing within the global community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body recognize and commend the People of Bangladesh, and especially the Bangladesh Army, for their significant and sustained contributions to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this body expresses its profound respect and gratitude to Bangladeshi peacekeepers who have served with honor, pays tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and conveys its solidarity and deepest compassion to their families, including those residing in the State of Georgia. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the press.
