# SR 847. 1980 and 2026 United States Olympic Men's Hockey Teams; recognize

## Text

Senate Resolution 847
By: Senators Jones II of the 22nd, Anavitarte of the 31st, Walker III of the 20th, Parent of
the 44th, Robertson of the 29th and others
A RESOLUTION
Recognizing and commending the 1980 and 2026 United States Olympic Men's Hockey
Teams for their historic achievements and contributions to national unity; and for other
purposes.
WHEREAS, forty-six years ago, in a time of significant global and domestic challenge, a
group of amateur collegiate players representing the United States faced impossible odds to
defeat the dominant Soviet Union team in Lake Placid, New York, an event forever
enshrined in our national memory as the "Miracle on Ice"; and
WHEREAS, that 1980 victory served as a catalyst for hope, bringing a weary nation together
as citizens from all walks of life rooted for "our boys" to bring home the gold, proving that
American resilience can overcome any obstacle; and
WHEREAS, today, in the year 2026, history has repeated itself in spectacular fashion as the
United States Men's Hockey Team has once again captured the Olympic gold medal in
Milano-Cortina, Italy, defeating Canada in a thrilling overtime victory on February 22,
2026—the exact anniversary of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice"; and
WHEREAS, just as it did 46 years ago, this triumph has provided a profound moment of
unity for a divided nation, reminding all Americans that when we face adversity, we do not
falter, but we instead roll up our sleeves and get to work to improve our country and achieve
greatness; and
WHEREAS, the 2026 team, led by heroes such as Jack Hughes, who scored the
game-winning goal, and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who made 41 saves, displayed the
same grit, unselfishness, that has defined the American spirit for generations; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of
these two legendary teams be recognized by this body as symbols of what is possible when
a nation stands together in pursuit of a common goal.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body
recognize and commend the 1980 and 2026 United States Olympic Men's Hockey Teams for
their historic gold medal victories and for their roles in uniting the citizens of the United
States.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the representatives
of USA Hockey and the members of the honored teams.

## Summaries written by Georgia Commons

The following was written by claude-sonnet-5 from the text above and is not part of the resolution. Quote the text, not the summary.

A Georgia Senate resolution honors the 1980 and 2026 United States Olympic Men's Hockey Teams for their gold medal victories and their symbolic role in unifying the country.

### Plain-language summary

This resolution from the Georgia Senate recognizes two U.S. Olympic hockey teams: the 1980 team known for the 'Miracle on Ice' victory over the Soviet Union, and the 2026 team that won gold in Milano-Cortina, Italy by beating Canada in overtime on the anniversary of that 1980 game.
The resolution does not change any Georgia law. It states the Senate's praise for both teams, citing players like Jack Hughes and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the 2026 squad, and frames both victories as moments that brought Americans together. It directs the Secretary of the Senate to distribute copies of the resolution to USA Hockey and the honored team members.

### What it does

- Formally recognizes and commends the 1980 and 2026 U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey Teams for their gold medal wins.
- States the Senate's view that both victories served as unifying moments for the nation.
- Names specific 2026 players, including Jack Hughes and Connor Hellebuyck, for their performances.
- Directs the Secretary of the Senate to prepare and distribute copies of the resolution to USA Hockey and team members.

### Who it affects

This mainly affects USA Hockey and the members of the 1980 and 2026 U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey Teams, who would receive official copies of the resolution. It has no direct legal effect on Georgia residents, businesses, or agencies.

### Why it matters

The resolution carries no legal or financial consequences for Georgians; it is a ceremonial statement of praise. Its main effect is that USA Hockey and the honored players receive formal recognition from the Georgia Senate for their Olympic achievements.

### Key provisions

- The resolution's whereas clauses describe the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' win over the Soviet Union and the 2026 overtime win over Canada in Milano-Cortina, Italy.
- The resolved clause states the Senate recognizes and commends both teams for their gold medal victories and unifying impact.
- A further resolved clause directs the Secretary of the Senate to make copies available to USA Hockey and the honored team members.
