WHEREAS, in 1996, the City of Atlanta hosted the Centennial Olympic Games, marking the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic movement and placing Atlanta and the State of Georgia firmly on the global stage as a center of commerce, culture, and international cooperation; and WHEREAS, the Atlanta Olympic Games catalyzed transformative investments in infrastructure, transportation, housing, public spaces, and economic development, reshaping Downtown Atlanta and creating a foundation for long-term urban revitalization; and WHEREAS, the momentum generated by the games underscored the importance of sustained stewardship, strategic planning, and coordinated investment to ensure that Downtown Atlanta remained vibrant, safe, and economically competitive in the decades that followed; and WHEREAS, in response to this need, the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District was created to provide dedicated services and leadership focused on public safety, sanitation, beautification, infrastructure enhancement, and business support within the downtown core; and WHEREAS, the district has worked in partnership with property owners, businesses, residents, and local government to preserve the legacy of the Olympic transformation by strengthening economic vitality, enhancing public spaces, and promoting a welcoming environment for workers, students, residents, and visitors; and WHEREAS, over the past three decades, the combined legacy of the 1996 Olympic Games and the ongoing efforts of the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District has helped position Downtown Atlanta as a hub for major sporting events, conventions, higher education, tourism, and small business growth; and WHEREAS, the 30th anniversary of the Atlanta Olympic Games provides an opportunity to reflect on the vision, collaboration, and investment that reshaped the city and to recognize the continued role of the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District in carrying that vision forward for future generations.
