Senate Resolution 872 By: Senators Halpern of the 39th, Jackson of the 41st, Orrock of the 36th, Kemp of the 38th and McLaurin of the 14th A RESOLUTION Commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and recognizing the enduring impact of the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, in 1996, the City of Atlanta hosted the Centennial Olympic Games, marking the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic movement and placing Atlanta and the State of Georgia firmly on the global stage as a center of commerce, culture, and international cooperation; and WHEREAS, the Atlanta Olympic Games catalyzed transformative investments in infrastructure, transportation, housing, public spaces, and economic development, reshaping Downtown Atlanta and creating a foundation for long-term urban revitalization; and WHEREAS, the momentum generated by the games underscored the importance of sustained stewardship, strategic planning, and coordinated investment to ensure that Downtown Atlanta remained vibrant, safe, and economically competitive in the decades that followed; and WHEREAS, in response to this need, the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District was created to provide dedicated services and leadership focused on public safety, sanitation, beautification, infrastructure enhancement, and business support within the downtown core; and WHEREAS, the district has worked in partnership with property owners, businesses, residents, and local government to preserve the legacy of the Olympic transformation by strengthening economic vitality, enhancing public spaces, and promoting a welcoming environment for workers, students, residents, and visitors; and WHEREAS, over the past three decades, the combined legacy of the 1996 Olympic Games and the ongoing efforts of the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District has helped position Downtown Atlanta as a hub for major sporting events, conventions, higher education, tourism, and small business growth; and WHEREAS, the 30th anniversary of the Atlanta Olympic Games provides an opportunity to reflect on the vision, collaboration, and investment that reshaped the city and to recognize the continued role of the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District in carrying that vision forward for future generations. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games in honor of its historic and lasting impact on the City of Atlanta and the State of Georgia as well as recognize the Atlanta Downtown Improvement District for its leadership and ongoing commitment to sustaining and enhancing the vitality of Downtown Atlanta. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to the public and the press.
