Senate Resolution 95 By: Senators Dolezal of the 27th, Burns of the 23rd, Goodman of the 8th, Watson of the 11th, Kennedy of the 18th and others ADOPTED SENATE A RESOLUTION Naming the forthcoming new legislative office complex the "Sonny Perdue Legislative Building"; and for other purposes. WHEREAS, George Ervin "Sonny" Perdue III of Houston County has served this state and this country with honor and distinction for many decades; and WHEREAS, Perdue served in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge; and WHEREAS, Perdue served his local community before being elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1990, serving as his party's leader in the Senate from 1994 to 1997 and later as President Pro Tempore of the Senate; and WHEREAS, Perdue was elected as Georgia's Governor in 2002, becoming the first Republican Governor of Georgia since Reconstruction; and WHEREAS, Governor Perdue guided our state with distinction and was reelected to a second term in 2006; and WHEREAS, Governor Perdue continued his service to our country when President Donald Trump appointed him to serve as Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture, a post he held for four years following his confirmation by the Senate; and WHEREAS, following his tenure as Agriculture Secretary, Perdue was appointed as Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, the post he currently holds; and WHEREAS, due in no small measure to the work, leadership, and achievements of Sonny Perdue, the State of Georgia consequently enjoys a robust business climate and economy that make possible the construction of a new legislative office complex on the grounds of the State Capitol that is worthy of the state's elected leaders and the People they serve; and WHEREAS, it therefore is proper and appropriate to honor Sonny Perdue's lifetime of public service and dedication to the State of Georgia and the United States of America by naming after him the new home and symbol of democracy in this state. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY that the new state legislative office complex, to be completed in the coming years, be forever designated and known as the "Sonny Perdue Legislative Building." BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution available for distribution to Chancellor Sonny Perdue and to the public and the press.
