26 LC 112 3714 House Resolution 1030 By: Representatives Hagan of the 156th, Camp of the 135th, Cannon of the 172nd, Tran of the 80th, Roberts of the 52nd, and others A RESOLUTION Commemorating 250 years of friendship between the United Kingdo m and the State of1 Georgia; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, the State of Georgia was founded in 1733 as the last of the original 13 colonies3 under a charter granted by King George II of Great Britain, establishing deep historical ties4 between Georgia and the United Kingdom; and5 WHEREAS, the City of Savannah, Georgia's first settlement, was laid out by General James6 Oglethorpe, a British philanthropist and military leader, and it remains a symbol of the shared7 heritage between Georgia and the United Kingdom; and8 WHEREAS, Georgia and the United Kingdom have maintained strong cultural and economic9 connections since colonial times, including trade in goods such as cotton and textiles during10 the 18th and 19th centuries; and11 WHEREAS, during World War II, Georgia played a vital role in supporting the Allied effort12 alongside the United Kingdom through military training at Fort Benning and shipbuilding13 in Savannah and Brunswick; and14 H. R. 1030 - 1 - 26 LC 112 3714 WHEREAS, today the United Kingdom remains one of Georgia's lead ing international15 partners, with British companies investing in Georgia's economy and Georgia exporting16 goods and services to the United Kingdom, spanning industries f rom logistics and17 manufacturing to finance; and18 WHEREAS, educational and cultural exchanges, including programs at Georgia universities19 and British-American organizations, continue to strengthen mutu al understanding and20 friendship; and21 WHEREAS, the newly formed UK-Georgia Friendship Group has been established to22 celebrate and strengthen this historic relationship, fostering deeper ties in trade, culture, and23 diplomacy.24 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that25 the members of this body commemorate the 250th anniversary of f riendship between the26 United Kingdom and the State of Georgia as well as express their support for deepening this27 historic partnership, promoting shared values, and expanding opportunities for collaboration28 in trade, education, and cultural exchange.29 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized30 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the31 Government of the United Kingdom, the British Consulate-General in Atlanta, the public,32 and the press.33 H.
