26 LC 129 0689 House Resolution 1096 By: Representatives Reese of the 140th, Mitchell of the 88th, Jackson of the 68th, Prince of the 132nd, and Herring of the 145th A RESOLUTION Commending Jack and Jill of America, Inc.; and for other purposes.1 WHEREAS, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., is a membership organization of mothers with2 children ages two through nineteen, dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders3 by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic4 giving, and civic duty; and5 WHEREAS, the late Marion Stubbs Thomas founded Jack and Jill of America, Inc., on6 January 24, 1938, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when 20 mothers came together to discuss7 creating an organization to provide social, cultural, and educational opportunities for youth8 between the ages of two and nineteen; and9 WHEREAS, in 1946, ten chapters were involved in the national restructuring process where10 a constitution and bylaws were drawn up and the organization was incorporated under laws11 of the state of Delaware; and12 WHEREAS, today, this organization has 262 chapters nationwide, representing 50,00013 families in seven regions with each chapter planning annual programming activities guided14 H. R. 1096 - 1 - 26 LC 129 0689 under a national theme, and through service projects, it create s a medium of contact for15 children to stimulate their growth and development; and16 WHEREAS, the Jack and Jill of America Foundation, Inc., is the philanthropic arm of Jack17 and Jill of America, Inc., and since its inception in 1968, the foundation has distributed18 millions of dollars to communities all across America; and19 WHEREAS, Georgia is a part of the Southeastern Region and home to the 28th National20 President Darlene McGhee Wittiington and the National Legislative Chair Dorothea “Dee”21 Dawkins-Haigler; other members of the Regional Executive Board consist of Regional22 Director Lisa Ivory, Regional Treasurer Shannon Chambers, Regional Secretary Sha’Rhonda23 McRae, and Member at Large Leila Jerome Clay; and24 WHEREAS, the Georgia chapters and their respective presidents a re as follows: Albany,25 Alfreda Sheppard; Athens, Cheryl Sewell; Atlanta, Felicia Nicke rson; Augusta, Melissa26 Johnson; Buckhead Atlanta, Brianca Cooper; Columbus, Crystal Shahid; Dunwoody-Atlanta,27 Terris Ross; East Suburban Atlanta, Tami Thomas; Fayette County Area, Tash-Marie28 Cheney; Golden Isles, Shontae Buffington; Greater Lake Allatoona , Lisa McLeod; Greater29 Metropolitan Atlanta, Tiaudra Shaw; Greater North Atlanta, Tracy Jimerson; Lake Spivey,30 Sandea Harris; Macon, Shandra Yarbrough; North Suburban Atlanta , Dawn Parker;31 Savannah, Tia Curtis; Southern Crescent, Neanda Andrew; Stone M ountain, Joy Hall;32 Valdosta, Jonessa Williams; and West Georgia, Kimberli Brown. 33 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that34 the members of this body commend the outstanding work of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.,35 and extend sincere best wishes for the continued success of this invaluable organization.36 H.
