A RESOLUTION
Honoring the life and memory of Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom; and for other purposes.1
WHEREAS, the State of Georgia mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished citizens2
with the passing of Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom on January 15, 2026; and3
WHEREAS, Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom was born on December 4, 1950, in Washington,4
Georgia, a beloved daughter of Albertha and Clemon Johnson; and5
WHEREAS, Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom, affectionately known as “ Von,” devoted a6
remarkable 50 years to the field of education, serving as a Business Education teacher and7
instructional leader at Social Circle High School, Briarwood Hi gh School, Russell High8
School, Tri-Cities High School, and Creekside High School, from which she retired in 2008;9
and 10
WHEREAS, demonstrating her commitment to real-world learning, V on established a11
functioning bank within the school, teaching students the funda mentals of money12
management, saving, and interest, and providing access to opening real bank accounts; and 13

WHEREAS, her impact extends far beyond the classroom as she fai thfully sponsored14
numerous school clubs; coached cheerleading, basketball, and vo lleyball; and mentored15
fellow educators; and16
WHEREAS, following her retirement in 2008, Von continued to educate, lead, mentor, and17
support students at various schools throughout the greater-Atlanta area as a parent liaison,18
substitute teacher, and on the Tri-Cities High School Alumni Association Advisory Council;19
and20
WHEREAS, a woman of service and sisterhood, Von was a member Al pha Kappa Alpha21
Sorority and remained a devoted to the Nu Lambda Omega Chapter throughout her life,22
exemplifying the sorority's principles of scholarship, sisterho od, and service, and was23
honored as “Soror of the Year” for her leadership and dedication; and 24
WHEREAS, a compassionate and generous woman, Myrtle Lavonne Joh nson Odom will25
long be remembered for her love of family, friendship, and community and will be missed26
by all who had the great fortune of knowing her.27
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that28
the members of this body join in honoring the life and memory of Myrtle Lavonne Johnson29
Odom and express their deepest and most sincere regret at her passing.30
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized31
and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to the32
family of Myrtle Lavonne Johnson Odom.33
