26 LC 129 0825 House Resolution 1195 By: Representatives Davis of the 87th, Burnough of the 77th, Jackson of the 165th, Cummings of the 39th, and McQueen of the 61st A RESOLUTION Commending Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. for its 113 years of service and recognizing1 February 23, 2026, as Delta Day at the State Capital; and for other purposes.2 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is a public service or ganization founded on3 January 13, 1913, by 22 visionary collegiate women at Howard University in Washington,4 D.C.; and 5 WHEREAS, the founding members included Osceola Macarthy Adams, Marguerite Young6 Alexander, Winona Cargile Alexander, Ethel CuffBlack, Bertha Pi tts Campbell, Zephyr7 Chisom Carter, Edna Brown Coleman, Jessie McGuire Dent, Frederica Chase Dodd, Myra8 Davis Hemmings, Olive Jones, Jimmie Bugg Middleton, Pauline Oberdorfer Minor, Vashti9 Turley Murphy, Naomi Sewell Richardson, Mamie Reddy Rose, Eliza P. Shippen, Florence10 Letcher Toms, Ethel Carr Watson, Wertie Blackwell Weaver, Madree Penn White, and Edith11 Motte Young; and12 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is a sisterhood of co llege educated women13 dedicated to academic excellence and committed to community service; and14 H. R. 1195 - 1 - 26 LC 129 0825 WHEREAS, more than 300,000 women have joined the organization t o implement the15 sorority's mission through its five-point programmatic thrust o f educational development,16 economic development, political awareness and involvement, phys ical and mental health,17 and international awareness and involvement; and 18 WHEREAS, the sorority has more than 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the19 United States as well as internationally, including Germany, En gland, Japan, the Virgin20 Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and 21 WHEREAS, the Southern Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. thrives under the22 dynamic and visionary leadership of Soror Regional Director Amaris L. Johnson, and this23 body extends its deepest gratitude for her tireless efforts, st eadfast dedication, and24 unwavering commitment to the empowerment of the communities she serves; and 25 WHEREAS, the year 2026 marks the historic 25th anniversary of Delta Days at the Georgia26 State Capital, celebrating a quarter-century of impactful social action, legislative advocacy,27 and civic engagement within the State of Georgia; and28 WHEREAS, Delta Days at Georgia State Capital has instituted the Georganna Sinkfield29 Servant Leadership Award in recognition of her service as the longest serving female in the30 history of the Georgia General Assembly; the Pota E. Coston Trailblazer Award, named for31 the first African American female commissioner elected in Fayette County, Georgia; and the32 Social Action Collegiate Change Agent Award, which is awarded t o a student actively33 involved in student government association leadership or partne r organizations who34 demonstrates the ability to create change in either the campus or community environment;35 and36 H. R. 1195 - 2 - 26 LC 129 0825 WHEREAS, members of this illustrious sisterhood serve as electe d officials, lend support37 to various local communities, and lead dialogues on public poli cy throughout their38 communities; and 39 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta members are committed to initiatives in alignment with its40 theme of "Solid in Our Sisterhood, Secure in Our Fight," making an impact for 113 years41 through sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action, allowing the members to continue42 its legacy of social justice through civic engagement. 43 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that44 the members of this body commend the efforts of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. for its 11345 years of continued commitment to public service and its work in making the State of Georgia46 a better place in which to live, celebrate the 25th anniversary of social action in Georgia with47 Delta Days at the Capital , and recognize February 23, 2026, as Delta Day at the State48 Capital.49 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized50 and directed to make an appropriate copy of this resolution available for distribution to Delta51 Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.52 H.
