26 LC 65 0030 House Resolution 1177 By: Representatives Glaize of the 67th, Rice of the 139th, Mitchell of the 88th, Williams of the 168th, Buckner of the 137th, and others A RESOLUTION Urging pedestrians in Georgia to wear bright or reflective clothing at night to improve their1 visibility to drivers resulting in a reduction of pedestrian de aths across this state; and for2 other purposes.3 WHEREAS, motor vehicle collisions involving pedestrians have risen significantly across4 Georgia, and pedestrian safety continues to be a paramount conc ern for the Georgia5 Department of Transportation and the citizens of Georgia; and6 WHEREAS, streets and roadways are particularly dangerous at nighttime hours due to the7 inherent reduced visibility; and8 WHEREAS, pedestrian deaths continue to surge in Georgia, with m ore than 294 people9 killed in 2024, and 84 percent of those fatalities occurring during nighttime hours; and10 WHEREAS, the United States Department of Transportation has fou nd that wearing11 reflective material that is visible from both the front and bac k is the most effective way to12 increase conspicuity and improve pedestrian safety; and13 H. R. 1177 - 1 - 26 LC 65 0030 WHEREAS, pedestrians who wear bright and reflective gear are more noticeable to drivers14 under reduced visibility conditions, increasing drivers' reaction time and helping to prevent15 accidents.16 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that17 the members of this body urge pedestrians in Georgia to wear bright and reflective clothing18 at night to improve their visibility to drivers resulting in a reduction of pedestrian deaths19 across this state.20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation shall continue its "See21 & Be Seen" campaign to enhance pedestrian safety across the sta te through improved22 medians, crosswalks, pedestrian signals, and added lighting.23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized24 and directed to make appropriate copies of this resolution avai lable for distribution to the25 Georgia Department of Transportation and the public.26 H.
